Cutting for the hours at home
We cut 35 pyjama sets, boxer shorts and lounge two piece sets for our lounge and sleep section. Pieces made for resting demand a different approach at the cutting table. Seams sit flat, waistbands release their grip, and sleeves leave room to move when you pull them up your arm.
Flat seams and soft waistbands
A seam that works well on a street trouser can press hard when you lie down on it. For our sleep pieces, we press the seam allowances open and finish them flat against the inside of the cloth. The waistband on a day trouser holds firm to keep the piece up, but a pyjama waistband needs to sit soft against the waist without digging in. We use wider elastic that spreads the tension across a broader band of cloth. Some styles carry elastic through the whole band, while others run elastic across the back and keep the front flat for a cleaner line.
Sleeves and pockets on lounge pieces
A sleeve cut for the house needs extra room through the bicep and forearm. When you push the cuff up to wash dishes or read, the cloth should stay in place without binding or cutting into the arm. Pockets on our lounge shorts are another construction choice. Some pieces use a stitched suggestion of a pocket to keep bulk down, while others have a real pocket bag set into the side seam. A real pocket holds small items around the house, though deep pockets can pull at soft cloth when you load them down.
Drawcords and elastic in the waist
We build the waist of our boxer shorts and lounge bottoms in a few ways. An enclosed elastic channel gives an even gather all the way around the hips. Adding a flat drawcord lets you knot the waist slightly looser or tighter as needed. If you want a clean front, look for a piece with elastic set only into the back waistband. The drawcord ends are finished with a fold and stitch to keep the tape from pulling back into the channel during a cold wash. The goal is a waist that stays put when you stand but yields when you sit.
Cutting two pieces from one cloth
We sell two piece sets together because we cut both halves from the same cloth. When a top and bottom are cut together, the weight of the weave and the way the cloth hangs match across both pieces. If you pair a separate top and bottom, the cloth often behaves differently after a cold wash. One piece might shrink slightly while the other stays loose, or one weave might soften faster than the other. Cutting the set as a unit keeps the drape balanced between the shirt and the trousers over months of wear.
Creasing and the limits of soft cloth
Cloth woven soft enough for sleep has clear limits. It creases easily when you sit or lie down, and trying to keep it pressed flat with an iron is a losing fight. The relaxed drape comes from a looser weave and lighter yarn, which means the cloth takes on folds whenever it is pressed against a chair or mattress. We do not stiffen these pieces with heavy facings or thick interfacing because that would make the seams stiff. A cold wash and a flat dry are enough to reset the weave without fighting the natural wrinkles.

Looking at the finished cut
Turn the waistband over before you decide on a piece. Check whether the elastic runs through the whole band, look at how the pocket bag sits, and test the sleeve width. We cut these pieces so they lie flat against you, leaving the pressing iron on the shelf.
