How a hem hangs from the seam
A hem does not hang on its own. The weight of the cloth, the line of the waist seam, and the construction under the skirt decide where the fabric lands. Two pieces cut to the exact same measure read as two different lengths once they leave the cutting table.
Weight changes how the drop behaves
Take one pattern and cut it twice in two different fabrics. A heavy cloth falls straight down from the widest point it touches, creating clean vertical lines that pull the hem down. A lighter cloth bends with the air and follows whatever sits under it, resting closer to the frame and breaking higher off the floor. The heavy drop holds its shape while you walk because gravity pulls the yardage true. The light weave lifts with movement. The two dresses share one measured length on the flat board, but they behave like two different pieces once you put them on.
The three shapes and their balance
A straight cut hangs directly from the shoulder seam without interruption, letting the cloth fall in one long run to the lower edge. A waisted dress breaks at the seam, restarting the drop from the middle of the torso and changing the balance of the skirt. An a line pattern opens from the waist band down to the hem, adding width at the bottom that swings away from the legs. Where the seam sits changes where the eye reads the start of the drop. Moving that seam up or down by two fingers shifts the balance of the entire skirt.
Hem finishes and internal linings
Turn the bottom edge inside out to see how the hem was finished. A rolled hem keeps the edge light, allowing thin fabrics to ripple naturally as you step forward. A turned hem adds a double fold of cloth, giving the bottom edge enough weight to pull the panel down. A faced hem uses a separate strip of fabric stitched to the inside, adding structure that keeps a wide opening round instead of floppy. A lining changes the fall too. It stops the outer cloth from catching on undergarments, letting the skirt slide smoothly with every stride.
Under panels and shorts on skorts
A skort looks like a skirt from the front, but what sits underneath dictates how the outer panel falls. Some designs use an internal short cut from the same cloth, giving real coverage and holding the waistband square against the hips. Other pieces use only a narrow front flap over a full short base. When the inner short is built with proper rise seams, the outer skirt panel stays flat and does not pull sideways when you take long strides. The weight of the inner legs anchors the garment, keeping the front flat even in a stiff breeze.
One piece garments carry from the shoulder
A romper is cut as one continuous garment from neck to leg hem. That means the shoulder seam carries the whole weight of the torso, the waistband, and the shorts below. If the rise is cut too short, the shoulder pulls down and the collar sits crooked against the neck. We build room through the torso so the fabric can settle without dragging on the top seams. The waist seam on a romper acts as an anchor point, distributing the load between the upper body and the lower hems so the piece hangs square.
- A heavy cloth falls straight down from the widest point of the garment.
- A light cloth follows the shape under it and moves with the air.
- A straight cut hangs from the shoulder while a waisted cut breaks at the seam.
- A faced hem adds weight and structure to keep a wide skirt open.
- The shoulder seam on a romper carries the weight of the entire piece.

Looking at the build before wearing
Check the waist seam, the hem turn, and the inner lining before deciding where a dress sits. A measurement on a flat table tells only half the story. The way the cloth drops from the shoulder seam and waist band determines where the bottom edge lands when you walk.
