How waistbands anchor our trouser cuts
A trouser takes its shape from how it hangs off the waist. We cut 32 wide leg and linen trousers, capri and palazzo cuts, culottes and shorts across our seven sections. The way the band is built decides whether the cloth stays smooth, gathers up, or moves when you sit down.
Three ways to build a waistband
A flat front band holds a clean line across the middle. It does not bunch cloth where you fasten it, but it stays fixed in place. A fully elastic band gathers cloth around the whole ring. It stretches easily and gives up the clean line for ease of movement. A band that is flat at the front and elastic at the back tries to do both jobs. The front panel stays smooth while the back channel takes up the slack. When a drawcord runs inside the casing, it lets you tighten the channel without pulling the front off center.
Leg cuts from hip to floor
Wide leg cuts fall straight from the widest point of the hip down to the shoe. The cloth breaks once over the foot or hangs clear of the sole. A palazzo cut widens as it drops, using more yardage through the sweep so the hem billows as you step. It needs floor length to show that sweep. Culottes stop between the knee and the calf, cutting a wide leg short so it moves like a divided skirt. Capri trousers end on the upper calf with a narrower leg that stays close to the seam.
Pocket bags and topstitched patches
Where pockets sit changes how the hip panel behaves. Cut-in pockets hide the pocket bag inside the side seam. If the hip is cut narrow, side pockets can pull open when you walk. Patch pockets sit topstitched on the outside of the panel. They hold their shape without pulling the main side seam out of alignment, but they add a second layer of cloth over the hip. Back patch pockets sit flat over the seat, anchoring the back rise where the back elastic channel meets the yoke seam.
Hem allowances and facing strips
The bottom edge of the leg decides how the hem falls against a shoe. A standard turned hem folds the main cloth up twice and runs a single line of stitching across the top. It adds weight to the bottom edge so the cloth drops straight down. A faced hem uses a separate strip of bias cloth stitched to the raw edge and turned inside. It creates a clean lower line without a visible fold line on the outside, which keeps a wide palazzo hem swinging free.
The nature of pure linen cloth
Linen is a plain weave made from flax fiber that softens after a cold wash. It allows air to move freely through the open weave. The fiber has little natural spring, so it creases the moment you sit down. Those sharp fold lines across the lap and behind the knees remain until the next wash. A linen trouser is cut with extra ease through the thigh and seat so the cloth does not bind when those creases set. Ironing damp cloth flattens the creases until you sit again.

Washing linen trousers at home
Wash linen trousers in cold water on a gentle cycle. Hang them by the hem to dry overnight so the weight of the damp cloth pulls out heavy folding lines. Press the cloth while it is still damp if you want a flat finish before you put them on.
